Community Project Grants
To provide educational and equity opportunities for women and girls in Jefferson County, AAUW Port Townsend, through its 501c3 University Women’s Foundation (UWF) , provides funds for projects that support educational or equity opportunity for women and/or girls in Jefferson County. Projects applying for funding must be chaired by an AAUW Port Townsend member.

Community Project examples:

Phonics Tutoring
AAUW Port Townsend and Chimacum Creek Primary School are partners in the Kindergarten Phonics Project. Volunteers work on basic reading skills with groups of three to four students. For the last four school years, the Phonics Project has helped Chimacum Creek kindergartners master reading and spelling skills far beyond previous classes.

Math Program
AAUW members have partnered with others in the community to improve the math competency of third graders in Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Quilcene, using small-group activities and individualized computer instruction.

Scholarships Program
Each year AAUW Port Townsend offers a scholarship for a full year's tuition at a college or universityfor a qualified East Jefferson County woman. In addition, three $,1500 scholarships are given to high school seniors from Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene schools. These scholarships are funded in part by the University Women's Foundation.

Scholars Recognition Project
This project recognizes female high school students who excel in mathematics, science and technology, with the goal of encouraging girls to pursue education and careers in those fields.

Career Day
Each spring, Port Townsend AAUW sponsors a Career Day for eighth-grade students in Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene. The middle school students have a chance to interact with local professionals and learn about careers which may interest them. Sometimes such contacts help give students a direction, and may inspire them to continue their education.

Grant Street Literacy Program
1. AAUW's Grant Street Kindergarten Tutoring Program provides targettetd students with one-on-one attention to improve essential pre-reading skills.
2. The Kindergarten Backpack Project provides hands-on manipulatives, books, and other materials for children in all four kindergarten classes at Grant Street Elementary School to use at home. These materials reinforce important skills in reading/language arts, math, and writing.
