In 2010 less than half of the 3rd graders in Jefferson County passed the state math test. In the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress), Washington State 4th graders ranked 9th in the U.S., and 8th graders placed 20th. Globally, in the assessment conducted by OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), US students ranked 25th.

Last winter, concerned AAUW members and friends partnered with Chimacum Elementary School to develop a program that would help 3rd graders improve their math skills. The positive results from that 2-month pilot are now being expanded to a 6-month Math Competency Program at Brinnon, Chimacum, Port Townsend, and Quilcene Elementary Schools in the fall. Service organizations, clubs, churches, and community members are being recruited to partner in this community-wide effort.

From October to the holiday break in December, lab coaches will help students focus on their individualized ALEKS computer program. From November to the holiday break, small group coaches will play simple number games with up to five students in a group.
