State & National AAUW

The American Association of University Women has more than 100,000 members in 1,000 branches nationwide. Since 1881, AAUW has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls.

Advocacy: Since its founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political. The Association's voice has long influenced legislative debate on critical social issues.

Research: In 1885, a group of AAUW members conducted a survey that debunked the popular theory that higher education was bad for women's health. That first study established AAUW's commitment to cutting-edge research relevant to the struggle for gender equity in school and in society. Today, AAUW's pioneering research draws national attention to issues of gender equity and education, and serves as a catalyst for action.

Fundraising: The AAUW Educational Foundation is the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. Each year the Foundation provides about $4 million in fellowships, grants, and awards for outstanding women and for community action projects.
