Elmira K. Beyer Scholarship Applications Now Open

Each year, AAUW Port Townsend, through its philanthropic organization, the University Women‘s Foundation of East Jefferson County, has offered a tuition scholarship to a woman working to complete an undergraduate or graduate degree. In 2012, we will be offering a $7,500 award. This endowed scholarship is given in memory of writer, musician, and exceptional leader Elmira K. Beyer, a founding member of the University Women‘s Foundation.

Any woman may apply for the 2011-2012 scholarship who has completed at least one full year of college at time of application, has maintained residence in East Jefferson County for at least the past two years, and is planning to seek a degree from a four-year college or university. The selection criteria include: educational and professional goals, financial need, and past academic performance. Applications must be postmarked not later than March 10, 2012.

Each spring, AAUWPT is pleased to offer several scholarships. In 2011, the branch awarded $14,500 in scholarships to local women.

The Elmira K. Beyer scholarship is awarded annually from proceeds of the UWF Scholarship Endowment Fund. It is intended to be a scholarship for a full year's tuition at a college or university for a qualified East Jefferson County woman. In 2011, Margaret Albright Siemion received the award for tuition up to $7,500.

The branch also awarded a $2,500 Academic Scholarship to recipient Chelsea Whalen.

Since 2000, our branch has also awarded a scholarship to a senior girl in each of the three high schools in East Jefferson County. In 2011, the recipients of the High School Scholarships were:
Claire Schraeder, Quilcene High School - $1,500
Cali Kopczick, Chimacum High School - $1,500
Elena Akins, Port Townsend High School - $1,500

These scholarships are funded in part by the University Women's Foundation, our branch's non-profit philanthropic arm.
